A tiny little 3229 with a 600/4!!? You just lock it into one position
and do all your positioning with the monopod, right? I actually
have two of those 3229s (one QR) and really don't like them. I find
that when loosened slightly to elevate or depress the lens that they
skip, catch and are just generally unpleasant. Knob is too close to
the head for a good comfortable grip, gripe, bitch, moan . . . :-O
Very interesting to hear this.

Yes Ken,
I really used a 600mm F4 L IS Lens on the 3229.
I used the QR plate on the tripod mount and keep the head
relatively loose for movement. The monopod serves as a rest so
I can move the lens up and down easily. Yes, the QR can be a pain
but if you tighten it down hard it holds pretty well and does not
twist. There is also a new QR platform for the 3229/3265
that does not twist. Just picked one up.
Problem is that it can scratch since the metal plate
is not rubberised wher it contacts the camera front/rear only
on the bottom. Gaffer's tape fixes that, albeit not so elegant.
Agreed that the knob is a pain, too small for me.
I have the 3265 grip which I have also used, but it adds a bit
of weight and I find transferring the heads between tripod
a nuisance so I leave the 3229 on the mono and the 3265
on my 3001N.
