> How fast is the 180 L macro in AF speed? Slow
> I'm interested in this > particular lens and have a look at the mint condition secondhand unit - > it focus very slow in the near 1:1 magnification comparing w/ other USM > lenses. Only one other USM lens goes to 1:1 ???? The 180 is a fantastic macro lens and my first choice for magnifications up to about 2.5:1 (adding 25mm tube and doubler). It would not be my first choice for a general purpose "200". For that it would have to be the IS zoom. > I know that in high magnification I should use Manual Focus You use whatever takes your fancy. The biggest problem with thinking about AF for macro is that unless the "point of focus" you choose coincides with a sensor you are stuffed. Focus/recompose does not work at macro scales - even on a sturdy tripod. Actually, with good eyesight MF is not that difficult ... > anyway, but I would like to use this lens an a general purpose lens > (which require at least decent AF speed). Is it normal, or should I > avoid this particular unit? It is normal for it to be slow. If you want the macro, buy it. If the macro is not your prime aim (but AF speed is) avoid it.
