Terry, this is one of the flashes I use. I use AA, NiMH batteries with complete success. In fact, I use these batteries in all of my film cameras - Contax, Canon and Pentax 645.
As my older NiMH batteries need replacement (rarely) I buy 1800 MAH batteries.
