Generally speaking any portable flash unit (as those shoe mount) aren't really destined for real studio setups, their output is indeed on the weak side for such kind of application. However, there is bunch of flash light modifiers offered for such kind of units including various softboxes, bouncers and even umbrellas. That allows to make some small "studio-like" setup or to use it portably while the flash is on the camera (either directly of sitting, say, on flash bracket). The latter kind of setup found its way among many wedding/even/social photographers. However, again, I doubt about its usability for real studio conditions.
