Sebastian, I've had the Sigma 17-35 EX HSM for a couple of years now and I like it. Do note that on this lens the "HSM" is what Sigma calls 'micro-HSM' and, like Canon's 'micro-USM' there is no full time manual focus. On the Canon 20-35 f/3.5-4.5 the USM is ring-USM and it has full time manual focus. Flare control on the Sigma is surprisingly good. It has better flare control than my EF 24-85 USM. Most of the folks with the Canon EF 20-35 f/3.5-4.5 like it, and it does score higher on photodo.com's tests than the Sigma. I haven't used the Canon. Knowing the Sigma well, and having heard much about the Canon, I feel either lens would do well for you.
