Hi Chip,

#3 Ken D. already has one, and a better one it seems. (I wonder if it could
be an ES-65 II)

#2 I disagree. A cylindrical or petal shape is not the only design that can
effectively shade the front element. A superb example is the unobtrusive
HN-35 bowl-shaped hood meant for the Nikon 45mm f/2.8P "pancake" lens.

Look also at the front cover of Pop Photo 2002 March.

#1 The finish is just as flat as dulling spray or matte black paint (which
is not bad). It is just that the rayon flocking is much more effective. I
used to have an EW-78B which could funnel light, however little, towards the
front element of the multi-element 28-135 IS. Only by replacing it with the
EW-78B II did I begin to see the full potential of that lens.
