I have an Elan 7 and the 420EX and the modelling flash works fine. Just now I attached the flash to the camera and set it to slave mode, put the camera in program mode just for simplicity, pressed the DOF preview button and voila! it works fine. I have custom function 7 set to "2" if that makes any difference at all. It shouldn't, but I thought I would mention it just for reference.
