Jim, Modeling flash is a steady stream of light (not enough to take a picture) from the flash so that the effects of a light setup can be seen before taking a picture. With digital it is less important as it is just as easy to look at a frame or two. With film, it's like the modeling flash on a commercial studio strobe. Regarding the better beamer, I use one for sports at night when I use my 400. One must use a minimum of 300 mm and I'd say that it adds the equivalent of a stop or slightly more. Arthur Morris, a bird photographer, sells them at www.birdsasart.com.
