If you leave the 420EX in slave mode it will zoom to its widest flash coverage and, every second or so, it will blink an annoying red aiming beacon using the vertical AF assist beam. However, if you activate metering with your camera (by half pressing the shutter button, or by using "*"), the blinking stops, and the 420EX behaves like normal hotshoe flash. Until the meter times out and that @!#$% blinking starts up again. Enough to drive a person crazy !!! Note that we are discussing the 420EX (not the 420EZ).
