First of all, I agree that a used lens would be a much better find if it
were available.  Second, it seems to me that most people by a lens of this
length for its reach.  That reach it enhanced with most digital cameras on
the market (other than the EOS 1Ds) -- that lens on a D30 or D60 ( and D10?)
would function like a 900mm f4 or on a 1D like a 780mm f4 and if you want
the reach then that is quite a lens.  If you decide to resale, then I am
afraid that you might have more of a problem with folks that would look at a
500 f4IS which is quite a bit cheaper (and lighter) as a better buy since it
"could" be considered a 800 or 650 depending on the camera body.  And, lest
anyone think this is not an issue, I just returned from a North America
Nature Photography Association meeting where a number of working pro's were
saying they are seriously considering adding a digital body for the extra
reach for those tough wild animal shots -- even though most of them would
also tell you that they don't like the concept of digital as most of their
editors are still insisting on chromes.
