<< I've decided that buying used lenses makes a lot of sense for a lot of reasons. The biggest reason is that someone else has already taken the hit in book value for you. Additionally if you look around and are careful there are a lot of good deals to be had even on a lens like the EF 660 4L IS. You can save lots of money and not have to worry about the lens value dropping if you take your time in this kind of purchase. >>
I have actually thought about just this issue, as I ,too, have bought quite a few used lenses...though none in this price range. Also, my experience has been quite good with buying used from photo.net classifieds. I have not and will not buy lenses from e-bay as I have heard too many scam stories from there. However, with the 600 IS, I have never seen any real great bargains. The most I have seen is a discount of about $800 or so...not that $800 is a drop in the bucket by any means...but think about what the $800 buys you. Warranty for a year (or is it more), the ability to return the lens, no questions asked, for 2 weeks while you make sure everything works perfectly. For a purchase this large, I am thinking that it is worth it for the $800. Also, given the 'scam' factor I think it would be tough to make such a used purchase without going on location to see and buy the lens in person...now you have the cost of getting there.....
