I would be very very scared buying any IS lens used. In fact, when I
got my 100-400 L IS, the used prices were not much lower than new.

The big thing about an IS lens is - why is the person selling? Perhaps
they gave the lens a bump and it's still working, but...

Big but as far as how long or how well it will work. I think most
people sell these lenses for some reason, and it just may be they
bumped it and want to dump it before something goes wrong. There is no
way to know these things. Except pony up and get a brand new lens like
I did.

A non-IS lens on the other hand, if it works, likely it is fine.

I have bought several used lenses, but not IS lenses, and they are as
good as new for signifigant savings. I just did not want to take the
chance after reading about so many people who did bump their IS lens
and had problems afterwards, but not right away.

The other factor is age and usage. Surely after a few years of
constant use, the chance of IS going bad increases greatly. Knowing I
got my lens new and never bumped it, my chance of keeping it working
for a long long time are great. And that's why I bought the lens, to
use for a long long time with no worries.
