I just purchased a few weeks ago Canon's 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS zoom, and am
extremely pleased with it, once you accept that it's a 'sunshine only' lens.
Comparing it to the 300 f/2.8 L prime I have rented in the past, I'd say
that the 100-400 is your 'poor man's' substitute for the 300 at apertures
above f/6.3 - every bit as good. But if your needs dip down at or below
f/5.6, then you're faced with no choice - buying the 300 f/2.8 L prime at a
couple thousand dollars more than the 100-400 zoom.

Best regards,

Bill Neukranz

Subject: EOS Another Lens Debate: 300 f/2.8 vs 100-400 IS

So I'm going to trade up/down/sideways into the Canon 100-400 IS. I never
bought the 75-300IS because I had the Tokina and it was no match, and it
took me a long time to warm up to the push-pull aspect of the 100-400 Canon,
but I've rented one several times now and decided it's what I want.
