I had that thought already :-) So I put my extension tube on my 50mm and shot a couple of slides with backlight. I was disappointed. They would make fine web images, and I think a dedicated setup would make them even better, but I don't think the ability is really there to produce a good scan. It might work well if you shot a projected slide though, that I didn't try.
