You don't say what body you were using, and I suspect this lens is new enough it doesn't need to be re-chipped. But that is a possibility if you're using an Elan 7, 10D or Rebel Digital and your lens is an older one. More likely the lens contacts need cleaning. I got similar behaviour a couple of weekends ago shooting with a 70-200 IS and 2X TC. Taking a Pink Pearl eraser to the lens and TC contacts cured it. Just make sure you don't get any eraser dust in the back of the lens!
