Hi Craig,

Just tested the 4 GB MD tonight. I only use Pretec 512 MB CF card for
comparison purposes, cannot test IBM 1 GB MD since I left the Muvo2
player in the office. However, I did notice during my previous test 2 or
3 years ago that the read/write speed of IBM 1 GB MD is comparable with
Pretec 512 MB CF card. Disclaimer: the test is NOT a scientific test. I
only use the manual chronometer/timer function in my Seiko watch.

Full format speed in EOS 10D:
Hitachi 4 GB Microdrive: 72 seconds
Pretec 512 MB CF: 5 seconds

Write format speed in EOS 10D:
Methodology: I set the ISO at 200 and 800, set the resolution in JPG
Large Fine and RAW, and took 9 consecutive shots to fulfill the internal
buffer of 10D. I start the timer during the first shot, and stop the
timer once the write process is completed by looking at the LED
activities in the camera.

Pretec 512 MB CF
write speed (seconds) total size (MB)
ISO 200 JPG Fine 32
12,9
ISO 200 RAW 72
41,2
ISO 800 JPG Fine 38
20,0
ISO 800 RAW 82
46,9

Hitachi 4 GB Microdrive
write speed (seconds) total size (MB)
ISO 200 JPG Fine 31
12,9
ISO 200 RAW 68
40,8
ISO 800 JPG Fine 38
20,0
ISO 800 RAW 78
46,9

Conclusion:
The write speed in EOS 10D is comparable between Pretec 512 MB CF card
and Hitachi 4 GB Microdrive. Even though Hitachi MD seems a little bit
faster, I doubt I can see/feel the difference in real life shooting.
The slow full format speed in Hitachi MD is really annoying, and I do
not have any explanation on this - just a though that probably EOS 10D
do the format process much slower in FAT32 file system (for Hitachi)
comparing with FAT16 file system (as for Pretec CF and IBM 1 GB MD).

Regards,,, Bambang.
