In terms of sharpness you will not see any difference in the 100 to
200mm range with both lenses at F8. There is a slight edge to the
70-200mm of about 5% but it would be very doubtful you will ever see
this difference unless you enlarge to 24x30. As to AF speeds, the
100-400mm is slightly slower than the 70-200mm. This is not to say it is
slow at all, just that the 70-200mm is very fast.  One note, some Canon
EOS cameras like the EOS-3 and 1v can make better use of F2.8 lenses
when it comes to focus tracking.  Check your camera manual to determine
if this helps you in any way.
