My parents went to Barcelona about 10 years ago and had no problem with anything untoward - I think they had their Olympus zoom compact with them at the time.
My strategy in such situations is to take a single body and lens - in my case an EOS1000F that I got for 29 on eBay and a Tamron 28-200 zoom. The downside of this is that the results are not quite so good as with prime lenses but for me at least are acceptable at A4. In fact I am surprised how good the latest version of the Tamron zoom is and well worth the UK price of 160. I sometimes take a prime lens with me and leave it in the hotel room and then make a second trip to something I really want to photograph. Usually this is a 28mm but I have sometimes taken 50mm or 20mm instead. My EOS 1000F is VERY scruffy (a trait which I have encouraged!!) and I find that it and a prime lens or compact zoom seem to attract very little attention anyway. What I do like is to enjoy my trip and photography without worrying about my pride and joy being stolen (unless my house is burgled when I am away!)
