Thanks to all who have responded in this thread. Because I tend to use it handheld, I think IS will be a benefit to me, and I will go for it. I think that access to a feature like IS is surely one of the reasons for using Canon gear. Considering the prices of new lenses, it would be a shame to spend all that money and not take advantage.
