The MTF charts for the lenses (along with other information)
are available from Canon's USA site:

http://www.usa.canon.com/eflenses/lenses/ef_70-300_45/ef_70-300_45.html
http://www.usa.canon.com/eflenses/lenses/ef_300_4/ef_300_4.html

Now Canon MTF charts are 'predictions' and not measurements
but the prime is clearly better at 300mm.

Having said that, I consider that these two lenses serve very
different purposes. The zoom is less than 10cm long and weights 720g.
The prime is over twice the length and another 500g. It's thus
perhaps no surprise that the faster prime is better optically.
The zoom is ideal for travel (or other situations where weight
is a concern) and is also less conspicuous. The prime excels
where optical quality is the overriding concern.
