Chip, thanks for the conclusive explanation. You've just sold me the
whole concept in general, the 70-200 in particular. I'm there. or I will
be soon. I'm visiting the USA in early June and will be buying from B and
H in NY (I live in the UK). Incidentally, thanks also to Malcolm in MK
(also UK) for his IS input.

Here's a treat (or not) for you in return. I'm an ex- manual focus Pentax
user (MX, LX plus fast glass) bust since moving to Canon digital I
couldn't bare the thought of parting with some fast manual focus fast
glass for my portraits...
