Okay, I am now looking at a DSLR to reduce costs. I currently have a
Minolta 5400, but by the calculations I have done (and had a friend
check),
if I can get away with a digital, it would be cost effective (btw, I
never
get prints). Kind of scary. So, portraiture will stick to film, but
other
things, right camera for the job and all.

I currently am using a EOS 3 for action shooting. I am interested in
primarily racing for this DSLR. What is the general opinion her for
action
photography (needs a clean 8x10, 16x20 would be nice)? I am looking at a
10D
or 1D Mark II or something in another system possibly. Sequential shots
are
nice, but more than 4 frames are probably not that needed. I do however
need
fast autofocus. That is a big one. I have heard massive complaints in
the
past on the 10D AF. For the 1D Mark II, I would probably have to wait
an
extra month or two, and the price difference would lead to continued
lens
rentals.

Robert,

Go for the 10D. There is not a AF system around that will properly track
a drag racer. A friend of mine is the chief Engineer and engine designer
for Lola in the UK Formula 1 (LeMans) circuit. He is also a good
photographer and told me that he knows of not one racing photographer
who actually uses AF. They all flip their EOS DSLRs to manual focus for
getting their shots. Sounds crazy, but its true.
I used a Fuji S1 for Rodeo about 3 years ago. It was only 1.5 fps, but
if you time it right it works. Doing it that way I did much better than
the following year using a 5fps SLR. Learned my lesson.
