I got all three message, Robert. In my opinion you will want to get the 1D.2. Like you, my film body is a 3 and had I went from a 3 to a 10D I would have been terribly dissapointed because they are not even close to being comparable cameras.
For sports, and especially racing the 1D will be the best choice. It's got a fast autofocus and while you say you don't need sequences the 8.5 fps will provide you with twice as many images of any given situation as the 10D. You don't have to use them as a sequence, you are just upping your chance of getting good shots. And, don't count out the 1D for portraits. Straight out of the box it's 8mp sensor will give you an 8x10 at 300 dpi. And, considering I've made 16x20 prints from my 4mp 1D, the 8mp 1D.2 will provide you with an even better image with which to make even larger enlargements. Once you get it you will consider selling your film bodies. I've had my 1D for almost two years now and haven't shot a frame of film. Sold my 7E and would have sold the 3 but apparently $900 was too much on ebay for an EOS 3 & PB-E2. Mike -- Hello All, Okay, I am now looking at a DSLR to reduce costs. I currently have a Minolta 5400, but by the calculations I have done (and had a friend check), if I can get away with a digital, it would be cost effective (btw, I never get prints). Kind of scary. So, portraiture will stick to film, but other things, right camera for the job and all. I currently am using a EOS 3 for action shooting. I am interested in primarily racing for this DSLR. What is the general opinion her for action photography (needs a clean 8x10, 16x20 would be nice)? I am looking at a 10D or 1D Mark II or something in another system possibly. Sequential shots are nice, but more than 4 frames are probably not that needed. I do however need fast autofocus. That is a big one. I have heard massive complaints in the past on the 10D AF. For the 1D Mark II, I would probably have to wait an extra month or two, and the price difference would lead to continued lens rentals. Subjects: 1. Sprints 2. Midgets 3. Karting 4. Drag Racing 5. Unknown as of yet. Any input would be useful.
