When I shot film, I carried my Rebel 2000 as a backup for my -3. It was
mostly used as just a backup, but I occasionally used it so I could have two
speeds of film, or (mostly) to have two different lenses mounted so I could
switch quickly. But the difference in performance between the two bodies
(especially in terms of focusing accuracy and speed) was enough that it was
difficult to switch back and forth.

When I first got my 10D, I carried my -3 as a backup, more in case something
happened to the 10D. Like you, I realized after a few months that having
the -3 just added extra weight to my bag (I literally haven't shot a single
frame of film since getting my 10D), so now it stays at home. Although if I
did ever switch back to the -3, I think the -3's superior AF accuracy and
speed as compared to the 10D's would frustrate me when I had to switch back.

The only reason I'd consider having a second digital body now is to keep two
lenses mounted. But not for $1500, and certainly not with the relatively
poor AF abilities of the 10D.
