Having a backup may seem like an unnecessary extra hassle until you've
had occasion to need it. On a trip to the Canadian Rockies my 1V died
on the second day of the trip. Fortunately I had an EOS 3 along as
backup . . . I like to think I got somewhat better shots than I would
have with the disposable. In my view it'd be really sad to go to all
the trouble of lugging all the lenses & accessories and then be unable
to use them because of the incremental additional cost/weight of
carrying a spare. Of course, if you're traveling in urban areas, you
could forget the backup and just pay (yikes) retail if you need it.

To the original question, I too have gone the transition of carrying
film and digital bodies, until my last couple of trips have been digital
only with the Mark II and old 1D as backup. I haven't needed the
backup, and I can see cases where it'd be more useful to have two bodies
with slightly different features along. If nature and travel shots are
part of the same trip, the 1Ds and 1D would be a nice combo - Mark II
for the extra reach and speed on the nature shots, 1Ds for full use of
wide angle lenses & higher resolution. For travel and general work,
maybe a 1D or 1Ds along with a 10D would be useful. The 1D or 1Ds for
'serious' shooting, and the 10D for casual shooting & where a smaller
camera/lower profile are desired.
