Hi All,

Thanks for the replies. I got a few interesting
things out of them :) My reasoning for 2 bodies
on a trip is that living in Australia, it costs so
much to get me and my family overseas that the cost
of a backup body compared to shots that I *might*
lose due to camera malfunction seems like good
insurance. After all I only get to some of these
places once. If I miss an opportunity for some good
shots I may not get back there again for a long time,
or not at all...

A 2nd digital body is not "cheap" insurance though.

Yet...

Quite a few years ago we were in Paris and a "middle
of the dark night in the hotel room" accident damaged
both my camera body and the main lens I was using.
Fortunately, a (big) bit of duct tape kept the camera
useable (film door & latch damage) but the lens had
to be replaced - fortunately Paris has camera shops :)

Yes I had a backup body, but it was back home in Oz!
At the time my kids (travelling with us) were only 3
and 10 months, so with all the stuff we had to take
for them a backup body wasn't on the "must have"
list. Way off the list in fact :)

I never even thought of a backup lens ... LOL

The P&S backup is also something that I've used at
times. I have a G2 which was my first digital camera
and still gets used at parties etc and by my wife when
we're on holidays (she won't carry an SLR). It's good
when the light is good, but a DSLR has spoiled me for
low light/high ISO use!

Skip,

I'm interested that you still shoot film, but mostly
only B&W - I guess that you must find that the digital
monochrome process is lacking compared to B&W
film emulsions?

Cheers
Gary
