Ken, I can only offer some very subjective info, but I've got a couple of
the Ambico chargers that hold a single battery and come with both AC and
cigarette lighter (12v) plugs. They also have several adapter plates for
batteries other than the BP511, one of which charges the tiny batteries that
fit into my wife's digital Elph. I use them mostly as 12v chargers while
travelling and haven't noticed any ill effects, but this is very infrequent
(couple of weeks a year) usage, so it's hard to say if there are any
permanent downsides. They don't charge any faster than my Canon charger did,
and they don't have the blinking indicator lights, but they do have charging
and full lights.

Something else to ponder before you plunk down the big bucks for the Canon
auto charger is how little it would cost (~$20) to just buy a very cheap
DC/AC inverter for your car and use your existing Canon AC charger. Unless
you have one of the D30/D60 ones, it will only hold one battery, but then
even the double ones only charge one at a time anyways.
