That is no different from right now. How long do you think Canon will continue to support the older CRW format? I would rather have a widely accepted standard, just as JPG and TIF are, that will have a longer shelf life, than a bunch of proprietary standards that come and go with amazing frequency.

DNG format fare.
Surely whenever Canon, or Nikon, or anybody else wants to add extra
features, then DNG won't deliver.
