As the transition from 4x5 press cameras to 2 1/4 x 3
1/4 did a few generations ago, followed by the
transition from MF to 35mm, the FD mount to EF....
The key is that the decision isn't up to Canon, it's
up to the marketplace. If photographers continue to
pay a premium for 1.3x and FF digital bodies, Canon
will continue to make them. If we choose to migrate
to a smaller sensor, and no longer buy FF cameras in
sufficient quantities for Canon to money on them,
they'll focus on smaller sensors.
Frankly, I think the sensor and image processing in
the 20D is already more than good enough for almost
all photo-journalism work. If Canon made a 1-class
body built around the smaller sensor I think they'd
sell a ton of them. But at the cost of canabalizing
curent 1D series sales.
