The intriguing part of this whole discussion is that digital has pretty much eliminated the need for standardization between vendors on the size of the sensor. Today, images are judged more on their inherent quality and not just on the size of the medium. What once would have been suicide for a film-camera manufacturer is now quite acceptable. What's keeping the 1.6 sensors from appearing in pro-level bodies is really noise levels from such a dense chip (which Canon seems to have under control quite nicely), and the availability of FF sensor and the willingness of pros to buy them.
