Hi, I have recently purchased a 20D which I love to use. Before that I was using a EOS30. The lens I own are 50mm f1.4 USM, 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 II USM, and the 70-300 f4-5.6 III USM.
Most of the time I am shooting portraits in my studio and wildlife outdoors for which these lens work quite well. The 50 becomes a 80 for portraits and the 300 becomes 480 for wildlife (all be it a cheap lens). The 28-105 used to be my general purpose travel lens but obviously now its lost the wide angle facility with the 1.6 crop factor. I have been looking for a new wide to mid zoom for general/ travel work and was after some opinions on what's good and what's not. I want decent results and would be looking to pay up to about 500. I like the look of the 17-40 L which I see a lot of people use and was wondering how the optics compare to my 50? I know its not as fast as the 50 but with it being an L it should be clearer, right? Also there is the new EF-S 17-85 4-5.6 IS which again isn't as quick as the 28-105 nor the 50 but its an option. I guess is equivalent to the 28-135 IS USM lens from 35mm days. Or is there something else I should be looking at? I'm not a landscape photographer so don't need super wide angle. I tend to use the 28-105 for visits to Heritage sites, Parties, car shows etc. Opinions please.... Simon www.thetopofahill.com -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
