That the master becomes automatically group A doesn't mean that
frontal light will be stronger, as you can set a ratio A:B of 1:8
(max) where you will see little of the effects of A, but it *does*
means that you have (almost) always a frontal light... think about it,
if you have to set your on-camera flash to the lowest power to get the
effect you're after, what's the point of having a flash on the camera
at all? At that point you understand how the ST-E2 makes a lot of
sense as you're able to use that 550EX as main light and then group B
(eg. your 420) as fill-in or accent light.
