I wouldn't be too surprised to see the time period between the 20D and
the next version to be a bit longer than the time lag between models of
the past few years. The technology is beginning to mature, IMO, and
really there isn't anything that I feel really needs to be added or
"fixed" on the 20D.
Well, the addition of an ISO indicator in the viewfinder would be a
welcome addition, but probably not the basis for a whole new model. I
think it'll go more than 18 months this go-round...

Mature? We are only the tip of the iceberg. The reason it may be delayed
is so Canon can develop larger (physically) Sensors at reasonable cost.
The larger the sensor typically meant the more defective ones you would
have to trash. As the technology improves and effectively the cost
improvements are made we will see the next 20D replacement have a 1.3
chip like the Mk II does today. This leaves the smaller chip for the
lower end Rebel and probably an and proved a bridge camera like a low
cost Mk II, say a 30D, toward the high end EOS 1Ds which will probably
have a 22MP sensor in the next year.
As with any Japanese company, the higher technology today will migrate
its way down the chain to lower end cameras as newer technology comes
out. So it is reasonable to see an 8MP G8 camera, a 11MP Rebel, and a
11-12 MP 30D, etc. in time.
