I had similar problems with my 3 and solved it the same way: turn it off.
The problem being with so many focus points so close together if your eye is
not in the exact position it needs to be in the reading will be off and the
camera will choose the wrong FP. Some shooters like portrait or landscape
won't have a problem keeping their eye in the proper position. But, sitting
on the baseline of a basketball game twisting 120 degrees around to follow
the action makes it difficult to keep the camera in the correct position.

But, then it just may be a factor of the digital parts of the camera take up
more room than their film counterpart and there just ain't room for the ECF
in there.

I dunno but I doubt it would be any more useful on a 1D than my old 3.

Subject: Re: EOS Eye Controled Focus

I agree with Malcolm's general assessment. I own an
EOS 1Ds Mk II now. I started out in the EOS world
with an Elan 7e with seven focus points and it worked
beautifully. The focus points were etched in the
screen. I just put one of the squares over the
intended target and it always hit the correct spot.
My next camera was an EOS-3. None of the focus points
are marked on the screen and if I was aiming at a
particular object in a "busy" picture I never know if
I would hit it dead on or on an adjacent cell. It
seems stupid but I ended up turning ECF off and only
using the single center square. What a fall back! I
always wished Canon would have offered an "engraved"
7-point screen for the EOS-3 to be used to a matching
7-point focusing option. If I had to go back to a
film camera now, I would pick the Elan 7e in a
heartbeat. I too very much miss the 7 point ECF.
