For me, an Error 99 usually means a problem communicating with the lens. The
four most likely causes:

1. dirty lens/camera contacts or lens not completely locked into place.
2. non-Canon lens that's not 100% compatible (Sigma, Tokina, Vivitar,
Phoenix, Quantaray)
3. battery grip not fastened ticghtly enough or an original, unmodified 20D
grip.
4. a problem with the AF motor or helical assembly in a canon lens causing a
bind at some point in the focus range.
