OK, I'll try. I originally babbled:
The 30D manual states that "when the CF card is replaced with a
newly-formatted CF card the folder and file numbering will restart
from 100-0001." Does this not apply to formatting the same CF
card? For some reason the CF card I bought started with something
like folder number 942 brand new out of the box, and I did do an
in-camera format first thing. Manually Resetting the file numbers
in the camera does advance the folder number, but reformatting the
CF card does not return the folder number to 100. Am I doing
something wrong? Or do I have to let it play out to 999 and start over?
What I failed to realize - or read properly - is that "Auto Reset"
is a necessary pre-existing condition in order for the reformat to
reset folder and file numbers to 100-0001. Selecting Manual Reset
only advances the folder number within a series and resets the file
number to 0001. . Selecting Continuous just does what it sounds
like, keeps adding files to the same folder. It seems to me that if
I continue to allow the EOS Utility to use the Date as part of the
file name, that that will avoid duplicating file names.
