Hi Marco,

I was once deciding between the two lenses you
mentioned - went with the 70-200F4L (cost me only 520
after a mail in rebate at that time) - I could not
have been more happier with my decision. Light,
handholdable lens, constant F4 aperture across all
range, FTM is very convenient - I can shift the focus
slightly ahead or behind without worrying about any
"flick" of a switch, while never even taking my eye
off the viewfinder.

Build, weight, construction, quality wise and ease of
use wise (big and easily grappable focus and zoom
rings) - top notch IMHO. Tack sharp as a zoom. I think
it is one of the (if not THE) cheapest L lenses
available. Only thing missing for me ? IS - yes
indoors, without flash the only option is the poor
man's IS: tripod (slower shutter speeds).

I would highly recommend pairing this puppy with the
Canon TMRA (B) - Tripod Mount Ring A (Black) which is
cheaper than the TMRA (W) - White ring and works
perfectly fine with this lens, except that it is
black. It is a godsend for switching between portait &
landscape mode - can't be any easier with this gadget.

Finally I use a smaller ball head tripod mount and it
fits with the BP-300 battery pack attached with the
lens on the TMRA (B) without any problems. However
some have reported problems with this setup -
depending on their camera gear.

What one loses with the 100mm shorter focal length is
much more than made up by the quality and
price/peformance ratio (the 70-200 IS costs an arm, a
toe and a few scrapes of the skin off the neck ;>).
The lack of IS perhaps the only major drawback IMHO
but it in my case it is compensated by the other
features.

Good Luck with your decision and hope that helps,

- Harman
