Just to play devil's advocate here ;-) >- Lose 100m long end... I think I will also buy a 1.4x canon to reach 280 >f/5.6 with good results (witch I do not have eith the 75-300) 75-300 is almost as sharp at 200, no need to mount extender
> - At 5.6 I still have AF on... Same with 75-300 >- Lose IS...... Ok can get faster speeds (f/4 against f/5.6) use a little >higher ISO (not so mutch noise at 800 with my 350D).... Use tele mainly in >bright light conditions, so I think thin will not be a "great" problem... And >70-200 f/2.8 IS will REALLY kill my budget... I rarely use my 100-400L IS in bright light. Interesting light seems at other times of day - IS on a long lens is a necessity for me and trumps an extra stop wide open which tends to have a too narrow a DOF at long FLs >- Gain excellent quality build (L lens) And more weight likely. >- Gain non rotating/extending lens None extending? I rarely shoot with filters, hate them >- Gain FASTER AF!! 75-300 hunst a lot especially at 300 and is really slow... My old 75-300 made a bit more noise, but it focused fast enough for me >- Gain FTM True, but rarely used with longer FLs. Flick a button, 75-300 manual focuses too It's pretty easy to rationalize spending a whole lot of money and getting a real nice L lens. You really should reconsider spending a bit more and getting IS. I'd go for the 100-400L IS if I were you. I hate mounting extenders changing lenses, and mounting filters. I use a 1.4X on my 100-400 almost never take it off. Would I ever buy a 70-200L IS, maybe. But I got that range covered and more with a 28-135 IS. I sold my 75-300 long ago but it was a good lens. Stop down a bit and its much sharper at the long end.
