There are wides, like the Sigma 12-24, that will work on both kinds of bodies. I think what you're seeing now is what many of us have been seeing for years now and have perhaps become more accustomed to. What you see as significant differences are old news to most of us, so we no longer think of it in such dramatic terms. The bottom line is that digital is a different beast than film, and while we all seem to be fixated on the size of a 35mm negative, there really isn't a 1:1 relationship in sizes of negatives and sensors. So for me, it's admirable that most camera manufacturers have been able to market digital bodies that support older equipment (lenses) designed and built long before anyone had thought about digital. I know it's easy to say "how come this isn't compatible", but I think we should be glad that there is as much interoperability as their is. I'd much rather spend a couple of thousand buying a new body than 10-15,000 buying all new lenses.
