To Ken and the group,

I went through this same thing a number of years ago and bought a Monaco colorimeter. To be honest, I just wanted to be able to say to clients that I had a profiled monitor. That way, if there was any question of color or contrast, I had this - in self defense.

I was never happy with any of the print profiles; they were just a little better than using the sliders. Part of the problem with print profiles is that this Monaco sytem relies on the use of your scanner. In my case that introduced too wild a variable. (Although others have been fairly successful.)

Rodney's advice is good - colororimeter CM is a limited solution. It may work for your monitor, but if you want it primarily for print profiles, you will be taking a chance. You could contact Xrite and find out if their system likes your scanner. If they have any hesitation, you may be wasting your money.

Hello all - hopefully this will go through and I'll be able to see the responses. perhaps if you wouldn't mind copying my personal email too? Thanks.

I'm very much needing to get my studio profiled/color managed. I've been on the verge of buying the Monaco/Xrite EZ Color package, based on some recommendations, but the other day I was looking through Andrew Rodney's "Color Management for Photographers" and he basically states that colorimeter-based systems weren't worth the trouble, that a spectrophotometer system was the only way to go. So this kind of throws me into a dilemma, since most of those start around $1200, which I can't afford. I know there are other colorimeter systems to consider as well.

Does anyone here care to throw in their observations?

Ken
