Lars,

I use a Spyder & PhotoCal setup on my computer. The colors of the
calibrated monitor match the 2200 print output very nicely, especially
when the monitor just had been recalibrated again . (Yes, calibration
should be redone regularily.)

I use the standard Epson "Semigloss" print profile. I am thinking
that the printed colors match the monitor colors so well because
the printer profile assumes a calibrated (or "standard") system?

The colors are there in the image regardless of your monitor or
printer calibration. If your printer profiles are accurate (I find the
recent Epson profiles to be quite good in that regard) then you'll
print the colors present in the image (within the gamut of the printer
of course). Likewise, if your monitor is calibrated the colors will be
accurately shown on the monitor.

The printer profile doesn't assume anything. It just translates from
the color space of the image to that of the printer.
