Peter, I have this lens also and use the thin Sigma filter on it. It is great. I have used Hoya HMC in the past as well, but the recent trip to Niger caused a lot of damage to it -- thankfully, not to the lens. :)
Don't use the cheap filters, use good filters (Sigma and Hoya are good, and not too expensive). I don't have experience with Canon filters though.
