The mechanics is usually at the back-side of the lens, so shouldn't have influence on the filter-size. I however find in the Camera-museum that also a lot of New-FD lenses already had 58mm filters, and even found the New-FD 85-300 f/4.5 with Series IX ;-) So the up-scaling happened already before the EOS-times had arrived. Maybe it was due to the newer zoom-designs they started using.
