That would explain why the middle of the lens is so fat, but not the size of the filter threads.

Styling? Appearance? Trying to keep the lenses from looking like this ? | | Its too bad we don't have a Canon spokesman on ( ) | _| forum to help explain these things......

The argument that more circuitry equals a bigger body is disproved by the increasing shrinking of digital devices. My guess is that the electronic circuits take up way less space than the mechanical linkages of old and today's circuits take up less space than yesterdays.

I disagree...... The shrinking digital devices is, in part, a result of the state ot the art in electronics. As anything devlops in electronics there is an increase in density of the circuitry and big things that do the same thing get smaller over time.. But.......

One thing that pretty much stays the same size is the battery. While battery technology helps batteries gain an increase in capacity they generally keep the same physical size. Another factor is ergonomics. You have to be able to hold the camera comfortably and steadily so that you get as sharp an image as you want.

Then there is the other factor, the lens. As was mentioned, the lenses are bigger for a number of reasons. The bodies have to be able to mount the big lenses. Can you imagine a 17-40mm f/4 L USM or a 400mm f/5.6 L IS USM on an Instamatic? One thing that helps Canon keep the body size relaytively small is the fact that the focus motors are in the lenses.

One more thought...... I wonder if this thread is prompted, in part, by the winter weather that is keeping me, and maybe many of us, inside and not out shooting....... :-\
