Subject: EOS Self Cleaning Sensor
All,
I'm sure lots of people now have more experience with the "Self Cleaning
Sensor". I am interested in these people's opinion on this feature.
Besides a P&S digital camera I still have not purchased a digital SLR (I did try a Canon D2000 and Nikon D1 for a while with disappointing results). The
biggest issue with digitized film/slides was the dust. I do have the funds
to purchase a 30D. Nevertheless, considering my past experience, I would be willing to wait and pay for a D40/D35/D30n/. So your opinion is appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Robert,

Gosh - you were an early tryer! I held off DSLRs until the 10D was available, and since then I've bought a 5D soon after introduction, and most recently for birding, a 30D. I live in the UK, change my prime lenses quite frequently as I prefer their quality to my non-L zooms, don't go to really dusty places, and have to clean my sensors rarely. Since introduction and ~7,000 images, the 10D has been cleaned twice. Once by me and once when I sent it in for a focus check / firmware upgrade. I've done the 5D twice in around 5,000 images, and haven't touched the 30D which has now done ~2,000 images in a very short time - but with few lens changes.

My 5D showed dust spots on prints* about 4 weeks after purchase and since I cleaned it, it's been free until recently, suggesting that the early dust was courtesy of its manufacturing process. My 30D, bought used and no doubt shaken in the mail, had dust on its focusing screen which although harmless was unsightly, and I found it very difficult to clear with a big blower bulb. I rarely shoot at really small apertures (f11 and down) which helps to keep the dust spot shadows out of focus.

My cleaning has not used anything other than a big bulb blower. (I do have the nylon paint brush and isopropanol alcohol treatment in reserve.)

*I'm now more careful before making a large print!
