The simple solution to the eating of AA batteries in a compact is to NOT use the monitor. Keep the stupid thing OFF and use the viewfinder to take your pics. (I will not even consider a compact without a viewfinder... fortunately Canon has kept the viewfinder in their compacts). Also, set the monitor so it does not pop up a review of the photo you just took. Even alkaline batteries will last a very long time using this method, and the lithiums will go seemingly forever. Besides.... it looks stupid and amateurish using the monitor to take a photo! :-)

Traveling with a digital camera that uses disposable AA batteries:

Airfare: $570
Hotel: $820
Food: $460
AA Batteries: $1,950

Pictures from the trip: Priceless

These compact cameras EAT AA batteries. My guess is that you would run through 1 to 2 sets per day (depending on how many shots you took). You'd want rechargeable AA's and a charger at the very least.

Those Lithium-Ion batteries hold a lot of power and need to be changed much less often than the NiMh rechargeable AA's or even the disposable kind.

The A570IS uses two AA cells. Not a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery. You won't have to carry a charger, unless your AA cells are rechargeable, so you won't need a wall plug. Carry a couple spare AAs bu if needed, just about anywhere you go in the world you can find AA cells......
