The simple solution to the eating of AA batteries in a compact is to
NOT use the monitor. Keep the stupid thing OFF and use the viewfinder
to take your pics. (I will not even consider a compact without a
viewfinder... fortunately Canon has kept the viewfinder in their
compacts). Also, set the monitor so it does not pop up a review of the
photo you just took. Even alkaline batteries will last a very long time
using this method, and the lithiums will go seemingly forever.
Besides.... it looks stupid and amateurish using the monitor to take a
photo! :-)

These compact cameras EAT AA batteries. My guess is that you would
run through 1 to 2 sets per day (depending on how many shots you
took). You'd want rechargeable AA's and a charger at the very least.
Those Lithium-Ion batteries hold a lot of power and need to be changed
much less often than the NiMh rechargeable AA's or even the disposable
kind.
