With 'facts' I mean what's given when one starts analyzing things. As an example, one may quote facts before building up an argument and reaching a conclusion. The term 'appearances' is confusing, as it implies that some facts only appeared to be facts for one/some, but not for others. Facts are generally not disputed, they are not what's being debated, instead it's the arguments that are debated, and the conclusions drawn when weighing the arguments.
If you look at an online dictionary, like: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/facts you'll find some eight meanings for facts, and appearances is not one of them. Cheers!
