An attendant on a cross-country flight nervously announced: "I don't know
how this happened, but we have 103 passengers aboard and only 40 dinners."
When the passengers' muttering had died down, she continued, "Anyone who
is kind enough to give up his meal so someone else can eat will receive
free drinks for the length of the flight."
Her next announcement came an hour later. "If anyone wants to change his
mind, we still have 29 dinners available

Subject: [COUPERS-FLYIN] Ercoupe insurance
Hey Couper's: I would like to obtain insurance on an Ercoupe that I do not
own, for my grandson to learn to fly in. I called my broker, whom I have
had
insurance through for many years, and she attempted to obtain a quote. She
indicated up front that she only knew of one company, Colonial I believe,
that
would quote on a 16 year old student pilot.
The broker has called me back and indicated that the three insurance
companies she thought would possibly give a quote all turned it down
because of
the airplane (1946 Ercoupe serial # 1777) It is hangared at AVO, and the
training would take place there.
I have called AVEMCO, and they indicated they would give non owner's
insurance. but would not list any named pilots. This basically limits the
policy
to cover a mistake made by my grandson only.
Have any of you obtained insurance on an Ercoupe with a 16 year old
student pilot? Or do any of you know whom I can call that can/will obtain
the
coverage? (I would like $25 K hull and 1 million liability, and be able
to cover
named pilots like the flight instructor. owner, and me)

Subject: [COUPERS-FLYIN] insurance subrogation
Speaking of insurance ...
Has anyone been subjected to subrogation by an insurance company?
Say I rent a plane at an fbo (if only they rented Ercoupes!). The fbo
provides insurance to cover any damage to the plane I might cause.
As I'm coming in to land, a gust catches me. I don't correct fast
enough, and the gust blows me off the side of the runway. The plane
suffers $10,000 damage.
The fbo's insurance company pays the full $10,000 to repair the plane;
the fbo suffers no financial loss.
But their insurance company then comes after me, using their right of
subrogation, and sues me for $10,000. I'm the guy they think "caused"
the damage, so they hold me responsible to reimburse them for what they
paid the fbo.
If I had $10K hull coverage in my own insurance, I probably wouldn't
lose $10K. I've heard that subrogation happens, but wondered if anyone
here has any personal experience. While I'm taking lessons, should I
get full hull coverage for the most expensive plane I rent, regardless
of what the plane's owner says s/he has in insurance coverage?
Thanks.
Tom

Lynn,
Check with Butler & Brown Insurance out of Iowa. I think their phone
number is 800-934-7763. They provide insurance to people that belong
to the Antique Airplane Association, and the Coupe qualifies. Heck,
they insured me when I had no Coupe hours and hadn't flown in 20
years. That can't be much different than Joel learning fresh.

Tom,
I just purchased renters insurance for that very reason...
The aircraft rental agency's insurance company went after a customer
recently.
I do not know the details but subrogation is alive and well.
Clubs often have better coverage.
