On Thursday June 29th, I took my wife on her first light plane flight in Coupe N99618. The flight was in celebration of 618's 60th birthday, born June 29th, 1946. It was my first legal flight with a passenger as a brand new Sport Pilot. I soloed at Ft Wolters Texas in 1976 (40 year ago), flew 2,000 hours as an Army helicopter pilot including over a 1,000 hours of combat, shot down, shot up, taken off flight status for medical reasons in 1978. Love my Coupe, love being back in the air after all these years. The wife and I will be at AirVenture 2006 the 25th to the 27th. Hope we see many of you there.

Bert - congratulations on the birthday, and your first sport pilot passenger.

Question for you: the date on your email (below) says July 14, 2006. I just got it today (July 31).

Did you just send it today (July 31)? Is Charter (or our Ercoupe mailing list) really that slow?

Thanks - and may you have many more birthdays with that special passenger!

Tom

Months ago, I flew back to my airport, Kezer 61TE, to find a neat row of
classic airplanes parked in the transient parking. They were all having lunch at the Wild Onion restaurant, next to the airport. The neatest airplane was a Stearman biplane. It was perfect, and worthy of display in a museum. I admired
it, parked my Ercoupe at the end of the row, and took a few pics.

Later, that very same day, that Stearman biplane crashed at Hicks airport 15 minutes away)while doing low altitude aerobatics. The pilot was killed and his
passenger brother was injuried.

It is sobering to realize you admired, and walked around an airplane, which
went on to crash only a couple of hours later.

It's kind of creepy to be familiar with an airplane that crashes and
kills 6 people. I took quite a bit of my 3-control training in a C150
at the Sullivan, Missouri, airport (UUV). While training, I got used
to the Otter that carried skydivers up over and over again on
weekends. This plane was the epitome of efficiency - landing long to
end up near the ramp, taking off from mid-field when weather
permitted to reduce taxi time, and very tight patterns to reduce time
and fuel.

Yesterday that plane with the pilot and 7 skydivers crashed on
takeoff on runway 24. Four were dead immediately; two more died at
the hospital; two survived, but are in critical condition. Right now
there is a TFR around the airport to provide a "safe environment" for
NTSB investigators.

I found out last week that my home airport, St. Clair, Missouri,
(K39) would be closed the entire month of August for resurfacing (not
the best communication to the pilots!). I moved my Ercoupe to a
shadeport at the Sullivan airport. I was out there today checking on
some things in the plane, and there was a solemn crowd at the
skydiving facility. I can't imagine what it must be like there. The
business was owned by the pilot and his father. It could be that
skydiving is leaving Sullivan for good.

And out of this, some residents interviewed said they had fears of
something like this, as planes flew over their homes on departure and
approach. Another black eye for GA (true, this was a business, but it
WAS a smaller plane).

I hope the TFR is lifted before a planned trip I'm making Friday!

Subject: [COUPERS-FLYIN] Seat Belts Shoulder Harness

Hi All...

Recently I bought a 1946 415C Ercoupe (S/N 670 N799TX) and wondered if anyone knows where you may be able to find a "Safety Belt with Shoulder Harness" arrangement. Two years ago I had Spinal Surgery and my 3rd, 4th and 5th Vertebre and now "Fused" and joined by a Steel Plate and six screws. I can just imagine what kind of "Forces" would be put on my spine IF I had only a "Seat Belt" for Safety in case of a "Sudden Stop"!! Any Ideas I'd be more than glad to hear about.

Regards...

Harry
Skyport sells a package of information with copies of 337 forms for various Ercoupe shoulder harness installations. It's worth the small fee. Also there is a couple of 337 forms in the members section of the Ercoupe Owners Club.

Subject: [COUPERS-FLYIN] 2 control Ercoupe for rent or for dual instruction in DFW ?

My wings will be broken for a while.
Anybody know about a 2 control Ercoupe for rent (long shot...unlikely) or for getting dual instruction (more likely) near DFW? I know the Fun Guys at Lancaster have a 3 control Coupe, but I would prefer a 2 control, to log some time during my overhaul.
I know I may have to pay a CFI to go with me.

I don't want to forget all I have learned.
