Norm; As Paul indicated, there is more than one configuration. However, on the Coupes I have worked on, the problem normally lies in the housing and trim wire running through the stabilizer to the elevator. It is possible to remove the housing without removing the stabilizer, but it is not easy. The clamp that holds the housing is up in the stabilizer. I have removed the elevator bellcrank assembly by carefully removing the 4 bolts that hold the bearings to the rear bulkhead, after removing the tail cone and disconnecting the elevator. Then just lay the bellcrank forward in the fuselage.
There is a joint in the trim housing just aft of the bulkhead in front of the stabilizer. You can remove the fairing and gain access to the joint. It is possible to remove the housing, especially since you are going to replace the trim wire anyway, by loosening the clamp up in the stabilizer, taking the housing joint apart, disconnecting the trim wire from the elevator, and pulling everything forward, out the opening you have in front of the stabilizer. (lubricate the heck out of everything with some penetrating oil first)
A recommendation, is to put an angle bracket on the bottom of the elevator along the side of the hole where the trim housing comes out. position it so that you can clamp the housing rigidly at this point. This seems to work much better than the piece of hose/tubing ERCO used.
You may find that by replacing just the rear portion of the housing that a new trim wire will function properly. I find that when you get the old trim wire out of the housing, you will find several places where water has entered the housing and allowed corrosion to make the wire rough and corrode the inside of the housing. If this has gotten to bad on the front section, you can replace that by removing it at the joint under the hat shelf.
You can buy the replacement housing pieces from Univair, or you can go to your local auto parts store and buy a 3/16 housing. The joint uses regular 3/16 tubing flare fittings.
Good luck and let us know how you make out.
